Topics for the Sumer Term
In our English lessons we will be looking at the book ‘The Pea and the Princess. We will be starting by retelling the story and continue by working on character description and narrative writing. This links perfectly with the upcoming royal wedding! Children will write invitations and report on the special day. We will also be celebrating in true royal style with a banquet!
In Maths we will be continuing to develop our understanding of multiplication and division. It is important that children develop their deeper understanding of applying these skills into problem solving activities. Children will continue to develop their recognition of time, focusing on reading times of 5 minute intervals.
In Science we will be looking at plants and animals. We will be growing our own sunflower and collect data on its growth development. Children will explore the life cycle of different plants and discover what they require for it to grow healthy.
Our DT lessons this term will be linked to our literacy text ‘The Pea and the Princess’. Children will have the opportunity to create a quilt and develop their fine motor skills.
Throughout the year the children will learn about the 6 main religions in RE. This term they will be studying Christianity.
This term, Year 2 children will have Spanish lessons with Mr Enrique every Monday afternoon.
It is important to remember the role that work at home plays in extending children’s learning. Homework is set every Friday and is expected to be completed by the following Wednesday. English and maths homework is to be completed online using ixl.com. Children have been provided with their username and password. However, in the event of these details been lost, please contact your child’s class teacher. Homework is an excellent way of reinforcing learning and is therefore compulsory for children to complete. In the unfortunate circumstance your child is unable to have access to a computer or tablet; lunchtime homework clubs are available.
We are encouraging books to be read on a daily basis in Year 2 and will be changing books everyday if it is appropriate. We are aware that some children will take longer to finish their books. If this is the case, then please write the page number that the child has got up to in their reading records. There will be a big focus on reading this term so let’s encourage all of our children to turn reading into a pleasurable habit. It is essential that children have their reading record signed regularly - every signature adds up for a reading certificate!
In Cedar class PE is every Friday and Chestnut class have PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Children need to have a full school PE kit, which includes maroon shorts, plain white t-shirt and black plimsolls. ALL kits need to be fully labelled with your child’s name and year group.
Year 2 looks forward to celebrating what we having been learning over this term, so please join us by watching our class assembly. Chestnut’s class assembly is held on 8th June and Cedar’s class assembly is held on 15th June. We look forward to see you.
Attendance and Punctuality
Please make sure your child attends school every day and arrives on time with their book bags and everything that they need for the school day. Please be aware that your child must arrive at school for 8.50am. For children to achieve their full potential it is vital they have high attendance. Our lessons start promptly so children need to be in school at the very beginning of the school day.
We no longer accept cash or cheques for trips and payment will only be possible using our SIMS Agora online payment system. Your child has a unique payment number which you may have already used to set up online payments for school lunches and after school care. If you have not set up your account, please notify the school office and you will be provided with your child's unique number. If trips do not require payment, you will still need to go online to give permission for your child to attend.
Please adhere to the High View Uniform code. Monogramed items (jumpers, cardigans and book bags) can be obtained online from www.mapac.com or telephone 01923 255 525. Other standard uniform items can be sourced locally.
