Summer Term 2017
The main topic for the first half- term is ‘All Creatures: great and Small’ along with the children’s interests and ‘Our Environment’ during the second half-term. We will be sharing stories such as ‘Dear Zoo’, ‘ Walking through the Jungle’, ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s’ and ‘Town Mouse and Country Mouse’.
We are planning to visit Battersea Park Zoo and the seaside!
Personal Social and Emotional Development
During our Circle Time children will learn about being a good friend, sharing and taking turns independently and trying to resolve conflicts independently. We will discuss fears of animals, fears of the dark and fears of monsters.
Communication and Language
During this term we will be focusing on speaking clearly and audibly with confidence and control and show awareness of the listener. Children will be using talk to organise sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events. We will be asking why and how questions to develop their understanding and own opinions.
This term children will be practising everyday how to write their own name and beginning to form recognisable letters. They will learn how to use scissors safely to cut different materials and to handle tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely and with increasing control. Children will be asked to put coat on and fast their zip independently.
We are focusing on counting from 1-10 and we will be encouraging children to recognise numerals in the environment.
We will also learn how to sort different objects by size, colour or shape.
Children will be encouraged to recognise and name 2D shapes such as circle, square, triangle and rectangle.
We are still developing our writing skills in nursery. We are encouraging to describe what they are drawing, as they are making marks on the page. Drawing pictures is very important. We are extending children to write their own names to develop their independence in preparation for reception.
Reading aloud to children for their pleasure and interest should build enthusiasm and enjoyment. Thought the day children will have different opportunities to share a favourite story, nursery rhyme, poem or non-fiction book with their teachers and peers. This is an important step towards independent reading and introduces children to new vocabulary and experiences.
Each child has a story book to take home to read with their parents. After you have read with your child, please remember to write a comment in their reading record book in order for them to be changed.
Understanding the World
We will use computers and IPads to research about different animals and to design an imaginary animal. Children will interact with age appropriate software. We will focus on developing our technology skills and talk about what we can observe in the natural world such as animals and plants.
Expressive Art and Design
We will be learning new songs related to our current topic. We will be exploring a range of materials such as, dough, construction, junk to create simple representations of things linked with our topics. We will explore colour and colour mixing within all of our topics.
Each child has a home learning folder. Home learning will be given out on Wednesdays. Children should bring their homework on the following Wednesday in order to receive a new task.
Each week you receive a newsletter informing you about what Nursery have been learning. You can access this via the school website and you will receive it by email. It will also detail messages and reminders of any important news.
Please make sure your child attends school every day and arrives on time. For children to achieve their full potential it is vital they have high attendance. Please ensure you collect your child promptly at 3:15pm from Nursery as it can be very distressing for your child.
Please adhere to the High View Uniform code. Monogramed items (jumpers, cardigans and book bags) can be obtained online from www.mapac.com or telephone 01923 255 525. Other standard uniform items can be sourced locally.
Outdoor play is a core part of our daily Nursery curriculum. Your children’s safety is our priority and we kindly ask you to provide a sun hat for your child each day. We are unable to apply sun creams to the children once in nursery and strongly advise that you apply sun cream each morning. Remember, even on cloudy days the weather can improve! Please ensure all items of clothing including hats are clearly labelled! Now that the fine weather has finally arrived, you may be considering buying summer shoes for your child. If you do, please remember that the shoes they wear to Nursery should fasten closely to their feet so that they can run, climb and play safely. Open toed sandals, flip-flops and ‘crocs’ are not suitable for this reason. Children should be encouraged to try to fasten their shoes themselves.
We no longer accept cash or cheques for trips and payment will only be possible using our SIMS Agora online payment system. Your child has a unique payment number which you may have already used to set up online payments for school lunches and after school care. If you have not set up your account, please notify the school office and you will be provided with your child's unique number. If trips do not require payment, you will still need to go online to give permission for your child to attend.
If a child wishes to change from school dinners to packed lunch or vice versa, they may only do so at the beginning of each half term. Payment should be made online using SIMS Agora. Details can be obtained from the school office. If any child has been advised by their GP or Health Care Professional to either, follow a special diet; or to avoid certain foods, please contact Edwards and Ward Special Diet and Allergen help line on the details below:
